Turning Challenges into Opportunities: The UNI Group’s Successful Financial Year 2023/24

Unimarkt branches transitioning into franchises

The UNI Group, made up of Unimarkt Handelsgesellschaft, UNIWholesale, and UNILogistik, faced a number of challenges this year. Firstly, the online shops within the group were not profitable and had to be closed. Secondly, following a ruling by the Constitutional Court regarding opening times, the 17 locations in UNIBox are facing changes in their schedules and operations.

Despite these challenges, the group was able to achieve total sales of around 474 million euros in financial year 2023/24, showing a promising increase from the previous year. However, one venture that did not prove successful was the concept of autonomous UNIBoxes, which led to their closure due to lack of profitability.

The know-how gained from this venture will be utilized in Nah&Frisch hybrid markets within the group. The group currently has a total of 23 Nah&Frisch hybrid locations at the end of the financial year and has an expansion plan for 16 more locations in place for next year.

Unimarkt is now operating two hybrid locations and sees this concept as the future of its operations amidst challenges in finding employees. The group consists of UNIWholesale, UNILogistik, Unimarkt Handels GmbH, and 50% ownership of the convenience supplier unik, which achieved sales of 87 million euros in the previous financial year. With around 3,100 employees, the group remains focused on sustainable growth and strategic expansion.
