TikTok’s Global Youth Council: Empowering Teenagers to Create a Safer Social Network

Global Youth Council Launched by TikTok to Enhance Teen Safety on Social Platform | TECHNOLOGY

In recent years, TikTok has been working to enhance the safety of teenagers on its platform through the establishment of a Global Youth Council. This program brings together 15 users aged between 15 and 18 from various countries to provide insights on well-being and inclusion on the platform. The social network, owned by ByteDance, already offers tools to protect minor users and ensure their safety, such as the Family Synchronization feature.

The goal of TikTok is to create a safe space where young people can freely express themselves without fear of harassment or cyberbullying. To achieve this, the company announced plans to establish a Global Youth Council in 2023, with the aim of listening to the experiences of young users and gaining their perspective on how to improve safety measures on the platform. The council now consists of 15 teenagers from different countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Morocco, representing various communities and defending young creators’ interests.

During its second meeting held recently, members of the Youth Council outlined their priorities for the year. They focused on improving well-being and inclusion for young people on TikTok by redesigning the TikTok Youth Portal and gaining more insight into complaints and account blocking processes. The council also discussed launching new media literacy campaigns aimed at countering misinformation and AI-generated content in partnership with external organizations such as ConnectSafely.

TikTok has conducted a global study in partnership with ConnectSafely involving over 12,000 adolescents and their guardians demonstrating its commitment to working closely with platforms to enhance safety measures for young people.

In conclusion, TikTok’s Global Youth Council is an important initiative that aims to promote safety for teenagers using its platform. By bringing together young users from diverse backgrounds and listening to their perspectives, TikTok hopes to create a safer environment for all creators on its platform. With ongoing efforts towards improving security measures through partnerships with external organizations such as Praesidio Safeguarding and media literacy campaigns aimed at countering online threats such as misinformation and AI-generated content; it is clear that TikTok is committed towards creating a safer space for young people online.
