Open to Tax Increase on Richest Individuals: French PM Gabriel Attal’s Proposed Approach.

What proposals does Gabriel Attal expect regarding taxing the wealthy?

During the 8 p.m. set of TF1 on Wednesday, March 27, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was asked for suggestions regarding an increase in taxes for the richest individuals. He stated that he is open to credible proposals from parliamentarians, social partners, and associations of elected officials. Attal emphasized that France is not a tax haven for anyone and highlighted the country’s national wealth tax and tax on real estate wealth.

In France, 10% of the population pays 70% of income tax, showcasing the special tax on high incomes that exists in the country. When it comes to taxing super profits, Attal mentioned that he does not have a fixed opinion on the issue, despite it being a divisive topic within his majority. He did mention the possibility of changing taxation on the super profits of energy companies, which only brought in 600 million euros in 2023.

The Prime Minister outlined two red lines – no tax increase for the middle class and retirees, and no hike in taxes for businesses. These are key considerations as discussions around tax reform continue.
