New WHO Regional Director Takes Up the Challenge to End Polio in Eastern Mediterranean

Health Ministers gather in crucial year to discuss polio eradication efforts – Global Polio Eradication Initiative

The 10th meeting of the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks, held virtually by health ministers from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, was recently convened. This was the first gathering organized by the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Hanan Balhky. The Subcommittee is committed to intensifying efforts towards eradicating polio in the region.

During the meeting, Her Excellency Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Co-chair of the Subcommittee, expressed her support for Dr. Balhky’s vision to end polio during his tenure. Likewise, His Excellency Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Minister of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates and Co-chair, also praised Dr. Balhky’s determination to achieve this goal.

The health ministers discussed regional strategies to combat polio and shared updates on outbreak responses and vaccination campaigns. The leadership of Dr. Balhky is viewed as a promising step towards bringing the world closer to eradicating polio.
