FIFA’s Silence on Israel in Gaza Sparks Outrage and Calls for Accountability

Bangladesh and Palestine face off in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier: Live updates and football news

FIFA’s failure to take action against Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to growing disappointment from Palestinian football players, officials, and fans. They urge the governing body of international football to hold Israel accountable for the loss of thousands of innocent lives, including many children.

The outcry has intensified as comparisons are made to FIFA’s swift action in banning Russia and Russian football clubs from international competitions following their invasion of Ukraine. Despite being strong contenders in the playoffs for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, Russia was swiftly eliminated by FIFA, a decision that was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

However, FIFA has remained silent on Israel’s involvement in the conflict in Gaza. The demand for action has grown particularly in the lead-up to Israel’s Path B playoff final in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. The match was held on neutral ground in Budapest, Hungary due to the ongoing conflict.

Despite multiple requests for comment from Al Jazeera, FIFA has failed to respond to inquiries about the situation. Many advocates are calling for Israel’s football team to be banned as a form of accountability for their actions.
